The Foundation: Speech Level Singing
Created by legendary vocal coach Seth Riggs, Speech Level Singing revolutionized how the world trains voices. Rooted in the centuries-old Italian Bel Canto tradition, SLS is built on one powerful idea: singing should feel as natural and effortless as speaking.
The method trains your voice to move seamlessly from low notes to high notes without strain, breaks, or tension. Instead of muscling through your range, you learn to keep your larynx relaxed and stable — the way it sits when you speak — while your vocal cords do the work they were designed to do.
Riggs spent decades perfecting this approach with the biggest names in music. His client list reads like a hall of fame: Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Ray Charles, Barbra Streisand, Madonna, and Kelly Clarkson — to name just a few.
The Evolution: Institute for Vocal Advancement
In 2013, Seth Riggs' most senior Master Teachers — led by Jeffrey Skouson, one of only seven Level 5 SLS coaches in the world — founded the Institute for Vocal Advancement (IVA) to take the method further.
IVA took everything that made SLS the gold standard and evolved it with modern vocal science. The result is a technique built on three pillars: respiration (how you manage your breath), phonation (how your vocal cords produce sound), and resonation (how you shape your tone). When all three are in balance, your voice works as one connected instrument — powerful, flexible, and free.
Today, IVA certifies over 250 vocal coaches worldwide through a rigorous multi-year program with annual testing. Their coaches train artists from Broadway to the Billboard charts, including members of Imagine Dragons, The Killers, and Panic! At The Disco.
